Apollo Community Code of Conduct

We are dedicated to fostering a positive, inclusive, and safe environment for all members, both online and offline. This Apollo Community Code of Conduct applies across all Apollo Community spaces, including but not limited to, (a) online community, discussion threads, chat channels (public or private); (b) direct messages within our Community platforms; (c) virtual or in-person meetups, events, conferences, or webinars; and/or (d) otherwise contributing to other Community spaces.

The Apollo community aims to provide a harassment-free experience for everyone. We do not tolerate harassment in any form, and our priority is to create a space where diverse individuals can collaborate, share knowledge, and learn in a positive, affirming environment.

Any violation of this Apollo Community Code of Conduct may result in removal from these spaces or other actions required by applicable laws.

We expect these guidelines to be followed by all community members, employees, customers, partners, and event participants.

Thank you for helping make this a welcoming, friendly community for all!

Expected Behavior

We encourage members to:

  • Use welcoming, inclusive, and respectful language.
  • Be respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences.
  • Accept constructive criticism with grace and professionalism.
  • Prioritize what is best for the overall community.
  • Show empathy and consideration toward fellow members.

Unacceptable Behavior

Apollo will not tolerate harassment, discrimination, or any behavior that threatens the safety and well-being of others. Examples include (but are not limited to):

  • Offensive comments, usernames, or emojis related to identity markers such as gender, sexual orientation, race, age, religion, or disability.
  • Unsolicited sexual advances, explicit content, or off-topic sexual behavior.
  • Misgendering, using inappropriate pronouns, or using rejected names.
  • Threats of violence or incitement to violence.
  • Stalking, following, or harassing others online or in person.
  • Intimidation, bullying, or sustained disruption of discussions.
  • Unwelcome sexual attention or inappropriate social contact.
  • Deliberate “outing” of any aspect of a person’s identity without their consent.
  • Publishing non-harassing private communication or making jokes that resemble harmful behavior.

Reporting and Enforcement Process

  1. Address Issue Directly (if safe). If you witness or experience a violation, and feel comfortable doing so, politely inform the violator that their behavior is inappropriate and ask them to stop.

  2. Contact Moderators. If the behavior continues or you feel unsafe addressing it yourself, please contact a moderator or administrator:

  • Use the flagging system: If you encounter an issue with content or behavior, flag the post, topic or conversation for review. You will have the option to explain the issue, which notifies moderators about the concern.

  • Send a message to the moderation team: You can send a message to our community moderators for support by creating a PM or DM, add @moderators and compose your message. If the person responsible is an administrator, they will recuse themselves from handling the situation.

  1. Emergency Escalation. If you do not receive a prompt response and you feel in danger or extremely uncomfortable, log out and/or follow up via email to community@apollographql.com.

  2. Moderator Action. Moderators will respond as soon as possible, identify themselves, and take appropriate action (warning, temporary suspension, permanent ban, etc.) based on the severity and impact of the violation.

  3. Details Help. Please provide relevant links, screenshots, and context to assist moderators in investigating.

  4. Appeals. If you wish to appeal a moderator’s decision, reply to the moderation notice or email community@apollographql.com detailing why you believe the decision should be reconsidered.

Enforcement

If a participant engages in harassing or otherwise unacceptable behavior, administrators may:

  • Issue a formal warning.
  • Temporary suspend or remove the person from specific community spaces.
  • Permanently remove the person from the community, if necessary.

The safety and comfort of those affected by harassment will be prioritized over the comfort of the violator. A violator may be removed until those affected feel safe with their return.

Consequences

Participants who do not stop harassing or otherwise unacceptable behavior after being asked will face consequences, including possible expulsion from the community. If the situation warrants, administrators may facilitate a conversation among the involved parties to prevent future incidents.

Prioritizing Safety

We are committed to fostering an environment where everyone, and especially those from historically marginalized groups, feel safe and respected. We handle all complaints in good faith, but we do not consider boundary-setting, criticisms of oppressive behavior, or references to system inequity to be considered harassment or violations of this Apollo Community Code of Conduct. Specifically:

  • Boundary Setting. Statements such as “please leave me alone,” or “I’m not discussing this,” or simply “no,” are not forms of harassment.
  • Calling Out Oppression. Criticism or calling out discriminatory behavior, assumptions, or language is not harassment.
  • “Reverse” Discrimination or Oppression. While we will review any concern a member brings us, we acknowledge that terms such as reverse racism or reverse sexism are often used to dismiss or downplay the real experiences of marginalized groups. Complaints solely based on someone expressing or validating the experiences of marginalized communities will generally not be considered valid claims of harassment under this Apollo Community Code of Conduct.

Nevertheless, if you believe you are experiencing harassment that violates our Apollo Community Code of Conduct, regardless of your identity, please follow our reporting procedures so we can investigate. We will review complaints on their merits and strive to ensure a fair, respectful environment for all.
