Intro - Aleksandar Susnjar

Hi, I’m Aleks!

By day, I help software teams and organizations succeed - both technically and as a leader.

My GraphQL journey started after building a few homegrown solutions for similar problems. Then I jumped into the real deal with BlueCat Networks (Java + graphql-java, pre-release demo on YouTube). From there, I helped Ford Credit (Java, Netflix DGS) and Leap Tools (Python, Strawberry) evolve their GraphQL microservices, implement federation, and establish solid schema and governance practices.

I also have a habit of writing down my thoughts at Cogitatorium, where I take a mean, no-nonsense approach to explaining what GraphQL is NOT (hard-learned lessons included), what it actually is, and why it can align better with security practices than some alternatives. I even built Paniql, an open-source tool showing how to calculate GraphQL request costs and enforce quotas. Want my take on why Federation is good? Here.

I’d love to collaborate on smoothing out GraphQL’s rough edges (pun intended) and making large-scale GraphQL and federation even better. I’ve drafted a comprehensive proposal on this, though I haven’t submitted it to the GraphQL WG yet - my time constraints are real! If you’re up for brainstorming or contributing, I’d love to chat. Just a heads-up: the proposal is big, but that’s because I included many small improvements that add up to something greater, together.

Looking forward to diving into discussions here!
