YCombinator MCP Hackathon + Apollo

Hey everyone!!

We’re going to be using Apollo MCP Servers today in front of the SF tech community for our YCombinator MCP Hackathon submission!

Will keep you posted on progress. Might need to pick your brains on a few pieces

Cheers,

David

Wow!!! If you need anything ping us and I’m happy to help out. I’ve been doing a lot with it and built multiple agents. Happy to answer any questions or get on a zoom if that would be helpful.

Good luck! :fire:

We’re stoked for this Dave. Can’t wait to see what you build.

@watson @Dan_Boerner Thank you both soooo much for everything! You really helped us get through the finish line this weekend :sign_of_the_horns:  :rocket:

Background
I’m building a new startup, ClinicaMind, focused on creating AI Digital Twins for Doctors, that fully integrate into the clinical workflow to help handle clinical tasks and patient interactions. A real extension of the doctor, that builds trust with patients, simplifies clinical interactions, and reduces the clinician workload. Helping care teams shift focus back to patient care - to make healthcare, human again!

Use Case
Dr. Julio Vega, UCSF neurologist, calls his twin on the phone to review today’s cases. He focuses on one particular case and deep dives on relevant clinical research to help prepare his care plan - all while on his commute driving home.

The Challenge
Enable Digital Twins to access multiple data sources during conversations, including EHR’s, research databases, imaging, labs, insurance, and more.

What we built
In just 6 hours, we built a functional demo of our a phone based conversational “Digital Twin” agent, which grabs patient data from multiple data sources including a live instance of Epic EHR, fetching published clinical research from PubMed, NEJM, etc via Perplexity, and all while keeping security top of mind with role based access for our subgraphs, and field-level encryption thanks to MongoDB. For interoperability, we built a simple UI to map fields and setup field level security for PHI (see screenshots).

If you want to try it out, hit me up on DM. I’ll share the actual phone number to interact with the AI Digital Twin :telephone:

All built in less than 6 hours, from scratch using: Vapi, Gumloop, Anthropic, Apollo MCP Server, Apollo GraphQL Server, MongoDB, React Router 7, and Python for data stuff.

The Tech
Originally, I had planned to use Apollo GraphQL Server to wrangle the multiple data sources and give us back a clean data set to pass to context. I had NO idea Apollo had launched MCP just 2 days prior haha. I absolutely loved the Apollo MCP Server flow. It’s so turn key. This is going to be huge!

@watson you really came this Saturday! Jumping on a call last minute to show me how to launch an Apollo MCP Server. Walking me through the setup, explaining all the details of operations, helping us troubleshoot MCP’s SSE deprecation…and all of this while making your daughter a P&J sandwich on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. You absolutely rock!

As always, LOVE Apollo GraphQL and our amazing community :apollo_logo_tan:

:camera_flash: Here’s some pictures of the event

First off, let’s geek out with some nerdy stuff. Here’s what built, from scratch, at the Hackathon this Saturday. We were able to get this fully functional thanks to Apollo MCP Server:

Conversational UX
Fully conversational agent built on top of VAPI, using them as our MCP client, which connects to multiple MCP servers including our Apollo MCP Server. Happy to share the phone number (privately) if anyone wants to try it out!

Cool Backend Stuff
Our solution for “Smart Mapping” between medical data sources (EHRs, etc). Providing a probability score for each field, detecting if it’s PHI/PII, and then allowing the admin to set role access and field encryption type.

Keynotes from the official “World’s Biggest MCP Hackathon” team, including Sam from Anthropic introducing the history, current state, and future of MCP

Hackers just hacking away @ YC Headquarters

@watson joined us via Zoom to help and remained with us in spirit throughout :sign_of_the_horns:

Guillermo Rauch, CEO and Founder of Vercel rockin an awesome mustache!

YCombinator Partner, Gustaf Alströmer, loving what we built
